Online Psychologist for Bangladeshis Abroad: Therapy in Bangla, Wherever You Live
You moved for study, work or family. On the phone with home you say everything is fine. But some nights the worry, the loneliness or the pressure from both sides is heavy, and there is no one nearby who understands the whole picture without a long explanation.
I am Psychologist Alal, a Bangladeshi psychologist with more than 5 years of practice in Dhaka. I see Bangladeshis living in the UK, USA, Canada, the Middle East, Europe, Malaysia and Australia online, in Bangla or English, on a private video call. You talk to the same person every session, and you never have to translate your life for me.

Why many Bangladeshis abroad prefer a Bangladeshi psychologist
There are good therapists in London, Toronto and Dubai. Still, many people tell me the same thing in their first session: they spent weeks explaining why their mother’s opinion about their marriage matters so much, or why “just set a boundary” does not fit a family where everyone lives in each other’s life. That explaining takes energy, and sometimes it ends with the person feeling misunderstood.
Research supports what clients feel. A meta analysis of 76 studies found that therapy adapted to a person’s culture worked better than unadapted therapy, and the effect was strongest when therapy happened in the client’s own language (Griner and Smith, 2006). The quality of the relationship with the therapist is also one of the most consistent predictors of progress across hundreds of studies (Flückiger and colleagues, 2018). It is easier to build that relationship when the other person already knows the context.
What this means for you
- You can switch between Bangla and English in the same sentence and nobody will ask you to slow down
- Family, marriage, religion and community expectations are understood, not judged
- The methods are still evidence based (CBT, ACT, ERP for OCD, couple and family work), adapted to your life
Does online therapy really work?
Yes, for most common problems. A 2021 meta analysis comparing live video therapy with in person therapy found no meaningful difference in effectiveness across conditions such as depression, anxiety and PTSD (Fernandez and colleagues, 2021). Another meta analysis the same year reached the same conclusion for a wide range of mental health services (Batastini and colleagues, 2021).
Online sessions also remove the practical barriers that stop people abroad from getting help: no travel after a long shift, no waiting list, and no need to explain to a GP or an HR officer why you want to talk to someone.
When online is not enough. If you are thinking about ending your life, are unsafe, or someone near you is in danger, contact local emergency services in the country where you live now (999 in the UK, 911 in the USA and Canada, 999 in the UAE, 000 in Australia). Online sessions are not an emergency service.
What people abroad usually bring to sessions
These are the themes I hear most often from Bangladeshis outside the country:
- Loneliness that nobody at home knows about. Everyone thinks life abroad is easy. The quiet evenings tell a different story.
- Guilt about ageing parents. Not being there when a parent is unwell, and the phone calls that carry that weight.
- Marriage across distance or across cultures. One partner abroad and one at home, or two partners raised with different expectations.
- Pressure to send money and succeed. Especially for people working in the Gulf on long contracts.
- Students under pressure. Exams, visas, part time work and the fear of disappointing family.
- Growing up between two cultures. Second generation adults who feel too Bangladeshi in one room and not Bangladeshi enough in another.
- Anxiety, panic, low mood and OCD that started or became worse after moving.
Here is a composite example, with details changed so nobody can be identified. A young engineer working in Dubai messaged me late one night saying he could not sleep and felt his chest tighten before every family call. At home everyone depended on his salary and nobody knew he was struggling. We met online on his day off. Over a few sessions we worked on panic symptoms with CBT, and on how he could talk honestly with his parents without feeling he had failed them. Part of what made the work move quickly was that the family context did not need long explanations.

How to start from abroad
- 1Send a short WhatsApp message
Your country and city, the hours you are free, and in one or two lines what you would like help with. You do not need to explain everything. - 2We agree on a time
I reply with available slots in your local time, the fee, and how to pay from your country. You decide before anything is charged. - 3Meet on a private video call
Use headphones and a quiet room, a parked car or a walk in a park if home is not private. The first session is about understanding what is happening and what you want to change. - 4Keep a steady rhythm
Most people meet weekly or every two weeks. We set the next session at the end of each one, so you do not have to rebook from scratch.
Privacy when you live with others
Many people abroad share a room, a flat or a house with relatives. Your sessions are confidential. I do not share anything with your family, employer or university without your written permission, except where someone’s life is at serious risk. If privacy at home is difficult, we can plan sessions for a time when you can be alone, or you can join from a parked car, an office meeting room or a quiet corner outside. Read more in my privacy policy.
If you visit Dhaka
Some clients start online and later meet me in person when they come home on holiday. My chamber is at 113/A, Gate No. 1 Road, Monipuripara, Farmgate, Tejgaon, Dhaka 1215, inside Model Addiction and Psychiatric Care. In person sessions are on Friday and Saturday, 3 PM to 9 PM. If a psychiatric review or medication is needed, a psychiatrist is in the same building. You can also arrange an IQ test or psychological assessment during your visit.
