Why organizations ask for mental health training
Usually something has already happened. A team is exhausted, sick leave is rising, a staff member has had a breakdown, or students are struggling after exams or a crisis. Leaders want to help but are not sure what to say or what is appropriate.
The cost of doing nothing is real. The World Health Organization estimates that depression and anxiety cost the global economy around 12 billion working days and nearly one trillion US dollars in lost productivity every year. In 2022 WHO published guidelines on mental health at work that specifically recommend training managers to support staff mental health and offering staff training in stress management and mental health awareness.
Workshop topics
- Stress and burnout: recognizing early signs and practical skills to manage pressure
- Mental health awareness: understanding common conditions and reducing stigma at work
- Training for managers and team leaders: noticing distress, having a supportive conversation and knowing when to refer
- Psychological first aid: supporting colleagues or communities after a difficult event
- Resilience for frontline staff: for health workers, NGO field staff and others in demanding roles
- Communication and conflict at work
- Student wellbeing: exam stress, anxiety and help seeking for schools and universities
- Training for teachers: spotting emotional and behavioral problems in students
- Parenting workshops: emotional health, discipline and screen time
Choosing a format
| Format | Best for | What people leave with |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness talk | Large groups, Mental Health Day events, first introductions | Basic understanding and reduced stigma |
| Interactive half or full day | Teams, managers, teachers | Practical skills practised in the session |
| Series over several weeks | Manager programs, frontline staff, student support teams | Skills that stick, with follow up and review |
How a workshop is planned
- A short call to understand your group, the problems you are seeing and what you want people to leave with.
- A personal outline covering topics, format and length, shaped around your audience.
- Delivery on site in Dhaka or online, with interactive exercises rather than slides alone.
- Follow up with simple resources and guidance on where individuals can get further support.
Formats range from a single talk to an interactive half day or full day session, or a series spread over several weeks.
An honest note on what workshops can and cannot do
A single workshop raises awareness and gives people language and basic skills. It does not replace ongoing support for someone who is seriously struggling. The most useful programs pair training with a clear path to confidential help, such as individual psychotherapy for staff who need it.
After a traumatic event, research has shown that pushing everyone through a one time group debriefing can do more harm than good. Psychological first aid, practical support and access to proper care for those who need it are the better evidence based approach, and that is what I recommend to organizations.
